Paulist Fathers: “Bringing Christ to a New Generation”

The Missionary Society of Saint Paul the Apostle, or the Paulists Fathers, is a Roman Catholic religious order for men, that was founded in 1858 by Fr. Isaac Thomas Hecker. They use the initials C.S.P. after their names. Their mission is to evangelize to the people of North America in a manner that is suited to the culture of North America. They were the first religious order of priests created in North America.

Issac Hecker, a spiritual seeker who spent some time living in the Transcendentalist utopian communities of New England, was a convert to Catholicism. He wanted to create an order of priests that could evangelize to the people of the United States in ways that would be more effective than the previous methods. With the help of several other American priests, Hecker founded the Paulists Fathers in 1858 as the Missionary Priests of Saint Paul the Apostle, in honor of Paul of Tarsus. They got their start in the Archdiocese of New York, establishing their headquarters in a parish on 59th Street. From there, they began their missionary work to the non-Catholics of the United States and Canada. Hecker responded creatively to the particular challenges of preaching the gospel in the United States, taking the message to the people rather than waiting for them to come to him.

The Three-Fold Mission of the Paulists:

Evangelization, which is the preaching of the gospel to those who have not heard it, and the invitation to all people to share in the life of the Church.

Reconciliation, the work of healing and compassion, calls us to reach out to Catholic brothers and sisters alienated from the Church community; it calls us to respond to the wounds of society and the hunger for peace and justice.

Ecumenism, the search for the unity God desires for the Church, opens us to the spiritual riches and gospel traditions of other Christian churches and urges us to work with one another for unity in life and mission. It opens us also to our unique spiritual kinship with the Jewish people, and to the movement of the Spirit in other world religions.

Currently, the Paulists minister in twenty cities. In addition, the Paulists operate national ministries including parish retreats, outreach to young adults, publishing and electronic communications. In total, Paulist institutions and ministries are staffed by 130 Paulists and a number of committed lay people who share the Paulist vision and mission.

The Paulist Fathers in Rome:

The Paulist Fathers have been ministering in the city of Rome since January 1st, 1922 when Father Thomas Lantry O’Neill became the first Paulist to staff the Church of Santa Susanna. The new rector set out immediately to install electrical lighting and find a carpenter who could build pews, American traditions that would make the church unique in Rome during the 1920s. The American community held their first public Mass in the church on February 26, 1922. Since that time, Santa Susanna has provided a home-away-from-home for English-speaking people living in Rome.
