
Maestro Aurelio Porfiri, the Director of Music.
Aurelio Porfiri has been the Director of Music at the Church of Santa Susanna in Rome since 1999. He was born in Rome on August 8, 1968. Aurelio has studied organ, piano, musical composition, choral conducting, Gregorian Chant and polyphonic music with various Masters, such as, Giuseppe Agostini, Nazario Carlo Bellandi, Domenico Bartolucci and Alberto Meoli. He graduated in choral music from the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Maiella in Naples, and has served as organist for the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (19th c. organ Cavaille-Coll), the Basilica of San Crisogono and the Church of Santa Maria dell'Orto (19th c. organ Pantanelli). Beginning in 1993 he became the substitute organist of the Vatican City Vicariate in St. Peter's Basilica and regularly performs during the weekly audiences with the Pope.
As a composer, his wide ranging forms include oratorios, masses, motets and hymns in Latin, Italian and English. Some of his work was commissioned and broadcast by Vatican Radio during liturgical programs. The radio has also chosen other works of Maestro Porfiri for other programmes. Apart from sacred music, which makes up a major part of his musical activity, Maestro Porfiri has also written various pieces for organ, piano, flute and other instruments.
Maestro Porfiri is frequently invited as adjudicator and lecturer for various institutions and organizations (Ex: Pepperdine University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, World choir games, Voyage of songs choir competition etc.etc.).
He has also written articles for the following journals: La Vita in Cristo e nella Chiesa, Liturgia, L’Emanuele, and La Nuova Alleanza. He has also collaborated with various publishers, such as, Edizioni San Paolo, Città Nuova, Canticanova (USA), OCP (USA), Centro Eucaristico and Hortus Conclusus.
