Tour Santa Susanna

The Death of GabinusThe fresco of the death of Saint Gabinus is by Baldasarre Croce (1558-1628). Here the saint is depicted, locked in stocks, and starving in prison. Friends are on his left to comfort him, and detractors on his right, to persuade him to give up his faith. Over his head is an epiphany of angels to inspire and protect him. Croce was born in Bologna, and worked closely with Caesare Nebbia, the many frescos of Croce here in the Church of Santa Susanna are his greatest surviving masterpiece.
