Church of Santa SusannaThe American Catholic Community in Rome, a vibrant parish for 90 years!

We provide a home-away-from-home for English-speaking people living in Rome. Our mission calls us to be a place of welcome. Recent news and announcements will reveal the kinds of opportunities our parish provides. We welcome people who'd like to become friends of Santa Susanna, and receive periodic news and updates on happening in the Rome community. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns we might be able to answer.

Carlo Maderno Facade of Santa Susanna, 1603

Here in Rome there are often circumstances beyond our control that can happen at the last minute, with or without advance notice. There are transportation strikes, civic, labor and international demonstrations, and holidays that you may not be aware of, causing delays and heavy traffic. Scaffolding in and out of Churches comes and goes so often sometimes we forget that it is there. The facade of Santa Susanna is currently being cleaned, but the process is very slow. This decision was made between the owners of the Church, i.e., the Cistercian Monastery, and the superintendent of the Patrimony of the state. Scaffolding went up in March 2011 and we have been told it will remain until April 2012. The most difficult part of this decision is that we have had to remove our beautiful access ramp temporarily for the duration of this cleaning.

Beginning in late November 2011, the restoration of the St. Genesius frescoes in the St. Lawrence Chapel will begin. A few years ago after the problem with the roof was finally repaired and the Church was re-opened, it was discovered that some water damage had occured with the beautiful fresco of Saint Genesius entering into Heaven. The damage is repairable and the work will begin as soon as scaffolding inside the chapel is erected. The fresco is by the Mannerist artist Giovanni Battista Pozo, who died in 1591, at the age of 28 after just completing this fresco cycle. This chapel represents the body of his work and the fresco which is quite beautiful needs to be rescued. The restorers estimate that the work will take 5-8 months.

Other than the St. Lawrence Chapel, the inside of the Church is open and beautiful and hopefully will remain so for a very long time. The work in the St. Lawrence Chapel will not affect our regular Mass schedule, nor our celebration of the sacraments. We ask for your patience and understanding when things happen here beyond our control.

The newest edition of As Romans Do 2010-2012 has just been published. This 144 page guide to Rome and Santa Susanna is a real treasure. It is dedicated to the Alumni of Santa Susanna Church and is filled with historical photos from our archives, as well as current photos from the past three years. Not only is it a parish handbook, it is also an excellent guide to visitors, pilgrims and new residents coming to Rome. It makes all kinds of recommendations for what to see and do, and provides opening times and costs for various museums and other places of interest.  It also includes 8 pages of Tips on getting around the city while you are here. We would be happy to mail you a copy of this book. Please send Fr. Greg (frgreg@santasusanna.org) your name and address and we will mail you a copy as soon as possible. All we ask is that you consider sending us a donation to help us continue our ministry here at Santa Susanna.
