Spiritual Walking Tours with Fr. Greg, LENT 2012
Wednesday OR Thursday Mornings, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM (time approximate)
February 29 (Wednesday), March 8 (Thursday), 15 (Thursday) and 21 (Wednesday)
Fee: 10 Euro for each tour OR 30 Euro for all 4.
Reservations are necessary. Fees are collected on the tour.
February 29, 2012, Wednesday: The Exarchic Monastery of Santa Maria in Grottaferrata, also known as the Greek Abbey of Saint Nilus, was founded in 1004 by a group of monks from Calabria led by St. Nilus of Rossano, a charismatic leader and a very important figure of his time. When St. Nilus, the monks' spiritual father, died shortly after founding the Abbey, St. Bartholomew the Younger, his favourite disciple and cofounder of the monastery, assumed their leadership. We will see the beautiful façade, the iconostasis, the portal, the triumphal arch and the frescoes. This will be a longer trip. We will meet at Santa Susanna at 9:30 AM (with our tour set for 11 AM) and for those who wish, we will stay in Grottaferrata for lunch.
March 8, 2012, Thursday: Chiesa Nuova and the Surrounding Churches. We visit the Church of St. Philip Neri (called the Chiesa Nuova) and San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, San Lorenzo in Damaso, Sant’Andrea delle Valle, Sant’Agnese in the Piazza Navona. We meet at Santa Susanna at 9:30 AM.
March 15, 2012, Thursday: The Pantheon and the Churches Beyond: including Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Sant'Eustachio, Santa Maria in Campo Marzio, San Luigi dei Francesi, Sant'Agostino and Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi (where we will celebrate Mass together). Meet at Santa Susanna at 9.30 AM
March 21, 2012: San Giovanni in Laterano, the Museo, the Baptistry, and the Courtyard. Meet at Santa Susanna at 9:30 AM.

Parish Field Trip to Arezzo
On Wednesday, March 28. Arezzo was a major Etruscan and Roman city,and was a prosperous independent republic in the Middle Ages, until 1289 when its Ghibelline loyalties were defeated by the Guelph Florentines. We’ll see the extraordinary frescoes of Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco, the Grand Piazza where La Vita è Bella was filmed, the twelfth century Santa Maria della Pieve, the Duomo, and San Domenico with the Cimabue Crucifix. We will leave Rome by train at 8:25 AM and return at 8:35 PM. Fees, train tickets and pranzo will be included. The total costs is 100 Euros. Extensive walking is involved.
